Nestled in a south-side Poplar Bluff neighborhood on Nickey Street, Eugene Field Elementary School has long been a cornerstone of the community, serving students in grades 1–3 as part of the Poplar Bluff School District. The school has built a strong reputation for academic excellence, ranking among the top 10% of all public elementary schools in Missouri and earning recognition as one of the state's eight Gold Star Schools — the highest state-level academic distinction awarded by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
Eugene Field has embraced a culture of student leadership through the Leader in Me framework for over a decade, earning designation as a Lighthouse School since 2016. Through this program, students develop leadership skills, set personal and academic goals, and take an active role in the life of their school community.
Looking ahead, the district was recently awarded a $1.5 million FEMA grant to construct a tornado safe room on the Eugene Field campus. Designed to withstand an EF5 tornado with winds up to 250 mph, the facility will serve students and staff during the school day and will be open to the broader community during severe weather events outside of school hours.
